German NH90s suffer navigation issues

The Bundeswehr has been forced to acquire six Garmin GPSMAP 695 systems for its NH90 Tactical Transport Helicopters operating in Afghanistan following issues with the aircraft’s digital map generator, it has emerged.

The portable GPSMAP 695 systems are being used a backup to the Cassidian Eurogrid digital map generator, which is part of the aircraft’s integrated avionics suite. 

Germany’s NH90 forward air medevac (FAM) fleet in particular has been hit by systematic failures of its embedded navigation equipment during missions over Afghanistan. 

The head of the German air expeditionary wing in Regional Command-North had reported this issue to his superiors
