French Navy EC225 arrives
The French procurement agency, the DGA has delivered the first of two EC225 SAR helicopters to the French Navy.
The two maritime security (SECMAR) helicopters were ordered back in December 2009 and will replace the Super Frelon in the long-range search and rescue role.
The first EC225 arrived at the Naval Air Station at Lanveoc on 22 April. The second aircraft will be delivered in June.
The Super Frelon will be retired after the second EC225 arrives.
The 11 ton EC225 can carry up to 24 passengers and fly up to 325 km/h. It's equipped with a 4-axis autopilot which allows the crew to hold a hover over the area of intervention in extreme weather conditions. To perform rescue missions at sea, the EC225 SECMAR is equipped with a winch to hoist two people simultaneously, or a stretcher.
Its crew includes two pilots, a winchman, a diver and a physician if necessary. Equipped with additional tanks, the EC 225 SECMAR be able to perform a rescue at 250 nautical miles (465 km) from the coast for up to 15 people.
