French Army, Air Force Cougars to be refurbished
The French defence procurement agency, the DGA, has ordered the refurbishment of five Cougar helicopters.
Four of the aircraft are operated by the Army, fifth is owned by the Air Force. The contract is part of a larger programme announced in January 2008 to upgrade 27 Cougars.
The primary mission of the Cougar is all-weather tactical transport.
The tactical airlift capability of the Army is carried out by a mix of Puma and Cougar. These renovated aircraft will remain in service long after 2011 when the new NH-90 arrives to replace the Puma. Delivery of the renovated Cougars is scheduled from 2012 to 2015.
