The French Air Force has rescued six passengers from a crashed Cessna light aircraft off the coast of Corsica.

The accident happened on Monday, October 12. After the incident, the Rescue Coordination Centre at Lyon activated air assets to find the Cessna 210 which had come down in the Gulf of Porto.

The air assets were immediately deployed to the area included an Atlantique survaillance aircraft of the French Navy, a French Air Force Super Puma from Solenzara, EC145 helicopters from Securite Civile, an EC 145 of the Gendarmerie and a Swiss Air Force Cougar operating on exchange with a helicopter squadron at Solenzara.

At nightfall, the passengers of the downed aircraft, wearing lamps and lifejackets were spotted by the Securite Civile EC145 using night vision goggles. The aircraft was immediately joined by the French Super Puma and the Gendarmerie EC145.

The helicopters began winching the survivors onboard with the Super Puma airlifting four of the group and transfering them  directly to hospital in Ajaccio. The French Air Force said the rescue operation was difficult due to strong winds gusting to 100 km/h and waves reaching four to five meters in height.
