Farewell To Kiowa From 1st Aviation Regiment And The Northern Territory
The Australian Army's 1st Aviation Regiment has bid a final farewell to Kiowa Helicopter in the Northern Territory.
A formation of Kiowa’s escorted by the ARH Tiger conducted a flyover of Darwin as it flew across the skies over Darwin.
The Kiowa departed the 1st Aviation Regiment and Darwin for the last time on the 27 October 2009. The aircraft has operated in the Northern Territory since the early 1970s and have been based in Darwin since November 1994.
The Kiowa has served in the Australian Army since November 1971 when the first production aircraft was handed over in Brisbane. Four aircraft loaned by the US Army had been used by 161 Independent Recce Flight in Vietnam prior to that time.
The departure of the Kiowas from 1st Aviation Regiment is a significant milestone in the introduction of the ARH Tiger. 1st Aviation Regiment will now focus on the introduction into service of the ARH Tiger from its home base at Robertson Barracks.
The ARH Tiger is derived from a Franco-German Tiger variant. It is armed with 70mm (2.75-inch) rockets, HELLFIRE II air-to-ground missiles and a turreted 30mm gun, as well as an Australia-specific communications and data transmission system.
