Euronaval 2010: How cornered submariners could fight back

A project to develop a submarine-launched surface-to-air missile is now being self-funded by the manufacturer after struggling to get funding from the German government.

The Interactive Defence and Attack System (IDAS) is now being matured by developers Diehl BGT as the programme is no longer seen as a priority for the German armed forces given the country's involvement with ISAF in Afghanistan.

Test firings of the weapon were carried out in 2008 and much of the development work in terms of submarine carriage has been completed. However, customers and contracts are lacking at the moment.
