EDA multinational helicopters exercise - AZOR 2010
As part of the European Defence Agency's Helicopter Training Programme (HTP), Spain is hosting a Multinational Helicopter Exercise, from 9 to 24 June 2010, in an extensive manoeuvre area between Logroño, Jaca and Zaragoza.
The Exercise, which is the largest of its kind so far, with more than 40 helicopters and 700 people attending from nine EU Member States, takes place just over a half year after the Ministerial approval of the HTP concept. The HTP programme consists of two live exercises per year, one focusing on individual training and one on interoperability and operational tactics.
AZOR 2010 is designed to allow European helicopter crews to practice the techniques of flying in a hot, high and dusty environment - the same conditions that many of the participants will encounter when they deploy on operations over the next years.
The organisation of AZOR 2010, the management of life support and the use of the ranges have all been provided by the host nation, Spain. The participants are Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Germany, Italy, Slovenia, Sweden, UK and the host nation, Spain. In order to ensure the widest participation, and as part of their support of the multinational helicopter initiative, Luxembourg is meeting the costs of participation.
At a VIP/Press Day, on 17 June, EDA's Deputy Chief Executive Operations, Adam Sowa, stated "
EDA is sure that Member States are ready to work together to improve helicopter capabilities" and he underlined the importance of this joint effort in providing training opportunities. "All this shows that there is a growing helicopter community which transcends borders, which wants to develop capability together and which is eager to share experience and knowledge. You should all be proud of the part you have played in turning concepts into reality", he added.
