Dutch Apaches get new ammunition
Royal Netherlands Air Force Apache attack helicopters will be equipped with greater precision munitions, the Dutch government has announced.
The intention is to replace Hellfire missiles and unguided 70mm rockets with laser guided 70mm rockets in a deal worth between 25 million and 50 million euros.
Currently the Apaches with the RNLAF are equipped with weaponry which is primarily aimed at combating armored targets.
Experience in Afghanistan shows that engagements of armoured targets are very rare, normal targets are objects such as cars, mud houses, caves and individuals in wooded or open terrain. The new ammunition features a high degree of accuracy in a bid to reduce civilian casualties and collateral damage as much as possible.
