DAC approves massive equipment procurement
India’s Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) has approved procurement plans for the Indian Navy and Indian Army at a combined cost of $6.5 billion.
Approved projects include the acquisition of 111 utility helicopters for the navy, along with 24 multi-role helicopters equipped for anti-submarine warfare for deployment from aircraft carriers, destroyers, frigates and corvettes.
The helicopters will be procured under strategic partnership with a foreign OEM. Indian industry will acquire technologies and set up production facilities to enhance its long term capabilities in the aviation sector.
DAC has also cleared a project to acquire 14 Vertically Launched Short Range Missile Systems to boost the self-defence capability of ships against anti-ship missiles. Of these ten systems will be developed indigenously.
The Indian Army will get 150 155mm Advanced Towed Artillery Gun Systems designed and developed by DRDO and manufactured by production agencies nominated by DRDO.
