Czech Mi-17s to receive AMPS upgrade
BIRD Aerosystems is to upgrade and improve Airborne Missile Protection Systems (AMPS) it had previously provided to the Czech Air Force, under a contract worth an undisclosed amount.
The missile protection system is installed on Czech Mi-17 helicopters (pictured) and has been operationally deployed in conflict zones, including Afghanistan as part of the NATO force.
The modernisation programme includes an upgrade to the MILDS UV missile launch detection sensors and the MCDU mission computers provided by BIRD Aerosystems, as well as provision for future installation of the company’s Missile Approach Confirmation Sensor.
Ronen Factor, co-CEO and founder of BIRD Aerosystems, said: ‘We believe that this overall improvement will allow the Czech Air force to keep focusing on important operational missions while knowing that their force is protected.’
Shephard Defence Insight calculates that more than 7,000 AMPS sensors have been sold for installation on platforms such as the UH-60/SH-60, CH-47, CH-53, S-70, SH-3, Mi-8, Mi-17, Mi-171, NH90, Tiger, P-3C, C-130, CN-235, VIP/HoS A340 and many others.
