Chinook simulators ready at Petawawa
A suite of CH-147F Chinook simulators and training devices at Canadian Forces Base Petawawa have completed on-site acceptance testing and are ready for use by the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF), CAE announced on 27 May.
The RCAF has already begun interim pilot training with the Chinook weapon system trainer. It is finalising other elements of the aircrew training programme with CAE, including courseware. The two expect the complete programme to be declared ready for training later in 2015.
CAE is the prime contractor for the design and development of the aircrew training solution at CFB Petawawa in Ontario. It will also provide in-service support for the solution for 20 years after its formal acceptance.
The training devices installed and ready to use at the base include a tactical flight training device, which is a fixed-based simulator with a 200X60 degree field-of-view visual display system and a CAE Medallion-6000 visual system with Common Database (CDB) architecture.
The weapon system trainer is a full-mission, full-motion simulator with a six-degree-of-freedom motion system, 200X60 degree field-of-view display system and a CAE Medallion-6000 image generator with CDB architecture.
Other training devices include a transportable tactical flight training device that can be deployed in-theatre and an integrated gunnery trainer for door gunners, loadmasters, and flight engineers. The latter can network with the tactical flight training device and weapon system trainer.
Lt Col Chris McKenna, commanding officer, 450 Tactical Helicopter Squadron, Department of National Defence, said: 'We have made great progress with a truly world-class synthetic training programme for our Chinook aircrews.
'The new MHLH training centre and the capabilities it will provide are perfectly aligned with the RCAF's simulation strategy and will enable us to maximise the use of simulation-based training throughout our training curriculum.'
