Aussie CH-47F completes HMAS Adelaide trials
The Australian Army's CH-47F Chinook helicopter has completed the first of class flight trials aboard the Royal Australian Navy's (RAN) Canberra class landing helicopter dock ship, HMAS Adelaide, the RAN announced on 14 October.
The vessel commenced a trial period in early August 2016 to assess all aspects of the aircraft, ship and equipment interface in order to develop embarked operating envelope recommendations for the Canberra class of vessels. The amphibious ship sailed from Tasmania to Darwin over a seven-week period, conducting hot and cold weather trials with the Chinook.
During the trials, the helicopter conducted 625 deck landings and flew 119 hours. The test team collected data from 1,342 test points.
Rear Admiral Stuart Mayer, Commander Australian Fleet, said: 'This data will facilitate the establishment of a comprehensive suite of enduring operating limits for the Chinook. It will provide a significant capability for Australia's amphibious forces in ship to object manoeuvres and humanitarian aid and disaster relief.'
First of class flight trials are carried out to set ship and helicopter operating limits for all elements of operation, including launch, recovery, in-flight refuelling, on-deck evolutions, transfers, vertical replenishment and degraded modes/recovery. They identify the conditions in which the aircraft, ship and/or equipment need to be modified for safe operations.
