China beefs up HK helicopter fleet

An armed version of the Z-9 helicopter previously unseen in Hong Kong was exhibited by the local garrison of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) at open days on 29 June and 1 July. 

A single example of the Z-9WA armed with two 23mm cannons mounted on pylons was put on display. This is not a new variant of the Z-9, but it adds significant firepower to the PLA’s rotary-winged squadron based at Shek Kong Airbase in the north of Hong Kong.

At the airbase the cannon-carrying helicopter was parked alongside a Z-9WA armed with an 18-round rocket pod
