China and Russia edge closer to heavy-lift platform

Despite some slow progress in recent years, the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) continues to jointly develop a heavy-lift helicopter with its partner Russian Helicopters, according to company sources.

Top officials from both sides met in Beijing on 29 January to discuss ongoing cooperation of this dual-use civilian and military platform.

The new craft’s take-off weight and payload capacity will be lower than the existing 29-tonne Mil Mi-26T, but that it will be adapted for use at high altitudes, according to a Russian military industry insider quoted on a PLA-sponsored website on 21 January.
