Jayhawk rescue basket prototype developed
The US Coast Guard Academy (USCGA) has designed a new and improved rescue basket prototype to support the agency’s SAR missions on MH-60T Jayhawk helicopters, the USCG announced on 10 May.
Cadets from the academy worked with the Coast Guard's Research and Development Center over the past year to improve the basket.
The new design can accommodate two individuals in the basket and will cut the time required to get rescuees hoisted onboard by half.
The flotation system of the basket has been reconfigured to increase the buoyancy of the basket by 79lbs of force. This upgrade will also allow for increased comfort of victims within the basket, as they will be surrounded by buoyant material on all sides.
The project has garnered interest from the Office of Aviation Engineering and the Aviation Logistics Center, which will consider whether to take the project further into a refinement and testing phase.
