A Sea King helicopter detachment from 12 Wing Shearwater, NS, is transiting the Mediterranean embarked aboard Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship Fredericton.

They entered the Mediterranean on Nov. 1 and a few days later stopped in Valetta, Malta for a port visit and Remembrance Day ceremony.

HMCS Fredericton is deployed on a six-month mission to the Arabian Sea, Gulf of Aden and Horn of Africa to conduct counter-piracy and counter terror operations alongside our NATO and coalition partners.

As part of Canada’s ongoing naval contribution to NATO, HMCS Fredericton will integrate into Standing NATO Maritime Group 1 (SNMG 10 to conduct counter-piracy operations.  The ship – including its Sea King detachment – will also contribute to Combined Task Force 150 (CTF 150) to conduct anti-terrorism operations.

HMCS Fredericton’s participation in Operation Saiph (meaning “sword” in Arabic) is part of Canada’s ongoing commitment to international peace and security.
