The Canadian armed forces officially accepted six CH-148 Cyclones to its maritime helicopter fleet at Canada's centre of naval aviation, 12 Wing Shearwater, on 19 June in line with the schedule that was decided on January 2014.

With the acceptance of the Cyclones, the armed forces now have the operational capability to start retiring the older Sea King helicopters. The six Cyclones are being used to train and test armed forces personnel.

The final-configuration CH-148 Cyclone will be capable of anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare as well as utility and search and rescue missions.

Meanwhile, the first two Sea Kings will go out of service this year after over 50 years of operations. The Sea King fleet will remain in service until 2018 as the armed forces transition to the Cyclone fleet.

Compared to the outgoing CH-124 Sea King, the CH-148 Cyclone is 10% faster and has 40% greater endurance and range and 36% larger usable cabin space, according to the government.

Diane Finley, Minister of Public Works and Government Services, said: 'Last year our government committed to delivering the first CH-148 Cyclone maritime helicopters, and I am pleased to be here today to see them now safely in the hands of the Canadian armed forces.

'This marks an important milestone in our Maritime Helicopter Project and demonstrates our commitment to equipping our men and women in uniform with state-of-the-art helicopters.'
