BAE Systems has been awarded a contract worth $50 million by the US Army to continue the production of MK 90 propellant grains for the Hydra 70 family of rockets, the company announced on 20 August.

The MK 90 propellant grain is a propulsion component of Hydra 70 unguided missiles. The Hydra-70 rocket is deployed from helicopters and some fixed-wing aircraft across all branches of the US military.

The production for the current contract will start from 2016 and continue till 2017. The MK 90 propellant grain is manufactured at the Radford Army Ammunition Plant in south-western Virginia.

Reed McPeak, vice president and general manager, ordnance systems, BAE Systems, said: ‘The Hydra 70 missile is the work horse of the unguided missile category. It is the most commonly used helicopter-launched weapon system in the world, and we are pleased to fuel this multi-service, multi-national system.’
