AUVSI 2013: Royal Navy selects AgustaWestland for RWUAS

The Royal Navy has awarded AgustaWestland a £2.3 million contract to develop its Rotary Wing Unmanned Aerial System (RWUAS) concept.

It is understood that the Anglo-Italian helicopter manufacturer, in collaboration with a ‘leading UK-based team’, beat off competition from Qinetiq and Northrop Grumman as well as Lockheed Martin and Boeing. The contract was awarded on 12 August.

Those companies involved are believed to have conducted flight tests at the West Wales UAV centre at Parc Aberporth recently. AgustaWestland’s winning consortium includes BAE Systems, Thales UK, Atlas Electronics UK, and Selex ES.

A spokesman for the Royal Navy told Shephard:
