Heli-Expo 2019: Airbus pleads autorotation defence ahead of US Navy trainer award

The upcoming US Navy Advanced Helicopter Training System (AHTS) contract is one that Airbus is confident it can win, despite suggestions that expected costs of repeated autorotation manoeuvres could prove to be the undoing of its H135 light twin proposal.

At stake on the AHTS programme, also labelled as TH-XX on account of the navy’s current Bell TH-57 Sea Ranger trainer, is a $900 million prize in return for the production of 130 IFR certified aircraft, with the contract award due in November 2019.
