India handed over a pair of Russian-built Mi-24V attack helicopters to the Afghan Air Force (AAF) on 16 May during a ceremony at the air base at Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul.

Vinay Kumar, India’s ambassador to Afghanistan, formally handed over the helicopters that had been bought from and refurbished by Belarus.

'These are a replacement for the four attack helicopters previously gifted by India to Afghanistan in 2015,' he commented.

These are the first two of four helicopters promised by Delhi as aid to the AAF. The helicopters will be used for counterinsurgency and counterterrorism purposes.
